Gary Goldsmith and Meghan Markle

Kate Middleton’s uncle, Gary Goldsmith, had some strong words for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle while discussing the couple during new episodes of Celebrity Big Brother UK that aired this week.

The younger brother of the Princess of Wales’ mother is appearing on the reality TV show for its first season in six years. Goldsmith was asked about Harry and Meghan while discussing the royal family with some of his fellow contestants.

Goldsmith, a controversial member of Middleton’s extended family, first revealed that he is occasionally called the “buncle,” meaning “bad uncle.” He went on to call Prince William and Kate the “savior of the royal family,” according to The Mirror.

Fellow contestants Louis Walsh and Sharon Osbourne then asked Goldsmith about Meghan Markle. Goldsmith told them that William, Kate and Harry were “really comfortable” spending time together before Markle came into the picture. Once she and Harry began dating, Goldsmith said there was an “extra dynamic” that introduced “a stick in the spokes and creates so much drama that I don’t generally think is there,” according to Us Weekly.

Goldsmith later told fellow contestant Fern Britton that Prince William has “always” appeared to have “an olive branch open at any time for Harry to come back and be part of the gang,” according to GB News.

"I genuinely think that they should take the titles away,” he told Britton.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have had a fraught relationship with the royal family for years. The couple decided to step down from their duties as senior royals in 2020 and have since settled in California, where they are raising their two young children, Prince Archie, 4, and Princess Lilibet, 2.

Despite the tension, Harry traveled to the U.K. for a brief visit last month after Buckingham Palace announced that his father, King Charles III, is battling cancer. The news of the king’s cancer diagnosis followed a hospital procedure he underwent for treatment of an enlarged prostate.

Goldsmith’s niece has faced health issues of her own this year. The Princess of Wales was hospitalized in January for an abdominal surgery. She has largely stayed out of the public eye since the surgery and isn’t expected to return to her royal duties until after Easter.
