King Charles Diagnosed With Cancer Following Hospital Procedure

King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer, shortly after being treated for an enlarged prostate.

In a new statement issued by the Royal family and Buckingham Palace on Monday, Feb. 5, it was confirmed that during his recent hospital stay, tests revealed that cancer was detected, though a specific type has not yet been shared with the public.

"During The King's recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer," the notification read.

It continued: "His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual."

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible," the statement further explained, adding, "His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."

According to People, the 75-year old reportedly personally told his family about the diagnosis, including his sons Prince William and Prince Harry, as well as his siblings Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, prior to the news being publicly announced.

As was previously reported, the King—who is the oldest person to accede to the British throne—received medical treatment earlier this month, for what was noted as a very "common" and "benign" condition.

“His Majesty’s condition is benign and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure," the palace said, per BBC, in a statement on Wednesday, Jan. 17. "The King's public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation."

Prior to undergoing surgery, the monarch was last seen publicly on Sunday, Jan. 14, as he attended a church service with his wife Queen Camilla at Crathie Kirk near the Balmoral estate.
