John Stamos has opened up about the moment he found out his close friend and Fuller House co-star Bob Saget had died. The legendary comedian passed away unexpectedly on January 9, 2022, at the age of 65 in Grande Lakes, FL. Stamos discusses the painful episode in his memoir If You Would Have Told Me, out today.

Near the end of the book, the former ER actor recalls the bizarre circumstances in which he heard the devastating news. Stamos was on his way home to his wife Caitlin McHugh with their five-year-old son, Billy, in tow, when he received a call from his publicist, Matt Polk. Polk asked Stamos if he had spoken with Saget that day. Stamos had not.

Polk then told Stamos that he had just received a call from TMZ, who told the publicist that “several sources” were reporting Saget’s death. Stamos was incredulous, partially because TMZ had erroneously reported his own death just a few weeks earlier.

Nevertheless unsettled, Stamos sent a text to Saget. When that went unreturned, he called Saget’s wife, Kelly Rizzo, who also did not pick up. Stamos summarily received a call from their fellow Fuller House co-star, Candace Cameron Bure, who told him that she had received “a weird DM” from a fan in Florida, who claimed Saget had passed away locally. Moments later, Rizzo called.

"When I switch callers over to Kelly, all I hear is a wailing scream. I hit the ground in the parking lot and my knees slam down on the asphalt. 'Nooooooooooooooooooooo,'" Stamos wrote.

"My son is still sound asleep in the backseat of my car. I pull myself together to drive home and start making calls. First to Caitlin, she’s in disbelief. She calls her parents to come watch Billy. Then to Dave [Coulier]. 'Dave, Bob Saget is dead.' … I call Lori [Loughlin], who's on the eighth hole of Lake View Country Club golfing with her husband [Massimo Giannulli]. 'Bob is dead, Lori.' She tells me later she dropped to her knees like me. Billy wakes up. 'Daddy?' I love you, son."

Stamos admits at the end of the passage, "I'm still not ready to accept that he's gone. Not sure I ever will be."

In his memoir, Stamos also recalled finding his then-girlfriend in bed with Tony Danza, discussed his plastic surgery history, and revealed he was a victim of sexual abuse in his youth. If You Would Have Told Me is out now.
