New Jersey Shelter Cat Keeps Getting Passed Over All Because She 'Looks Different'

Every animal deserves a home. But sadly so many languish in animal rescues and shelters, just hoping for a chance to find a permanent placement. Sadly, cat Squidwarda is one of those animals. The kitty has been passed over several times while at the Homeward Bound pet adoption center in Blackwood, New Jersey because she "looks different."

It's a story that's common, but still so sad. An animal has one minor defect and they don't get a forever home.

There's at least one person out there who sees how special Squidwarda is. She's a volunteer at Homeward Bound named Kathryn Custer, who shared a little bit of Squidwarda's story in a touching video online.

Custer explained that Squidwarda is believed to be about 7 years old and has been in the animal rescue for about six months.

"Squidwarda has been passed over so many times because she looks different," Custer explained in the clip's text overlay. The poor kitty has a swollen nose "but that doesn't mean she deserves to wait 6 months for love. She is ready for an adopter, foster, or rescue to pull her," she added.

Custer is really hoping that things will change. "She's ready for a comfy bed," she wrote.

Commenters thought Squidwarda was just perfect. "She’s beautiful I don’t see her as different,"wrote. "I don't see anything wrong with her. she's beautiful," someone else agreed. "Perfect nose for scritches and kisses," a third commenter pointed out. "I would take her in a heartbeat if i saw her!" another commenter gushed.

Ways to Help Local Shelter Cats Even If You Can't Adopt

Of course we want every animal to get adopted, but it's not always feasible to take in a new animal. There are many reasons why you shouldn't adopt. But if you still want to help your local animal shelters, there are many ways to do so.

The easiest thing you can do is become an advocate. This can either be by re-sharing posts from a shelter's social media page, hanging adoption fliers around town, or simply through word of mouth.

Another big job that needs being filled? Transporting animals. It can be hard for shelters or animal rescues to coordinate getting animals to and from the veterinarian appointments.

Walking dogs is another great way to lend a hand. Many facilities are short-staffed and need help getting their dogs some exercise. If the great outdoors isn't really your thing, you can also volunteer to pet cats which will help them get socialized.

In the end, it's not important how you help, it's more important that you try to help in the first place.
