It’s true: metallics are the new neutrals.

Jane Fonda

You may correlate Jane Fonda with her decade-spanning acting career, including films such as Monster-in-Law, Book Club, and the Netflix show Grace and Frankie; however, she’s also proved to be a notable activist who fights against climate change.

Yesterday in New York City, Time hosted its annual 2024 Earth Awards, where the publication honored individuals who are impacting our planet for the better. Fonda was recognized for her leadership when it came to cultivating a more sustainable future—and she looked good while doing it.

The actress wore an uber-cool purple suit with a coordinating violet blouse underneath. Gold jewelry served as the cherry on top, while soft, voluminous curls and a red lip completed the look. Though, I can’t talk about Fonda’s look without calling out her bold shoes.

Featuring a strappy front and thick block heel, Fonda’s metallic footwear gives a nod to the likes of Amal Clooney, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Jennifer Lopez, who have all worn the style. The shoes add a glitzy element to an already exciting ensemble, proving that metallics may be the new neutrals, making a once daunting trend approachable.

The open-toed front makes the shoe ideal for spring, too, offering a sandal-like silhouette perfect for warmer days. Fonda even convinced me to swap my typical white sneakers for this statement look; just picture a pair of wide-leg jeans with these Naturalizer babies—it’s just too good to pass up! But I have a confession: I’ve been wearing similar footwear for years, relying on disco ball-like shoes to instantly upgrade my looks. So, I’m glad to see the rest of the fashion world finally on board.

Fonda-inspired sandals are also super simple to make your own. Opt for a lower heel and thicker straps, like these Franco Sarto Nora shoes, or consider a higher, stiletto-like Marc Fisher LTD version. More affordable options, like these on-sale $33 Amazon picks, are just as great, too. As long as you secure a pair that fits into your aesthetic and lifestyle, then you’re good to go.
