James Gunn is currently working on pre-production for Superman: Legacy, the upcoming film that's set to be the first entry in the newly rebooted DCU. While the new Superman movie is said to feature many DC heroes besides the Man of Tomorrow, that apparently won’t include Batman.

“Well he can’t appear in Superman Legacy because he’s not in the script,” Gunn said on Threads when asked by a fan why we can’t see Batman in the DCU before his standalone film.

While Batman was never announced to be a part of Superman: Legacy, it’s easy to see why fans might have made the assumption. Superman: Legacy will begin filming in March and feature DC heroes like Guy Gardner, Mr Terrific, and Hawkgirl alongside David Corenswet’s Superman. The film will also see a new Supergirl introduced in the DCU before starring in a spinoff film, along with cameos from members of The Authority. With a film so packed with superheroes, it’s natural to assume it might have Batman popping up in it as well.

The DCU’s new Batman will most likely debut first in The Brave and The Bold, which will also feature Damian Wayne as Robin. Unlike Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise, the DCU’s version of Batman will be a more experienced vigilante, with much of the extended Bat family already established in the film. The Brave and The Bold will be directed by Andy Muschuetty (The Flash) and currently has no release date attached to it. Batman fans can still look forward to Robert Pattinson starring as the Dark Knight in The Batman Part II, which releases on October 3, 2025.

The Brave and The Bold may not have a release date, but we’re bound to get a casting announcement sooner rather than later. Given that the first chapter of the DCU, titled Gods and Monsters, has already been set in stone, the film most likely already has its plot mapped out. Don’t be surprised to see casting announcements later this year, with the film going into production in 2025 at the earliest.

Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
