Sure Iowa can be cold in the winter, but you can experience all four seasons and it is affordable.

This year, Forbes selected one Iowa town as the best place to retire. So where is it?

Iowa City is considered one of the best places to retire, according to Forbes. Home to the University of Iowa, the city has a population of 77,000 people. It is located in Johnson County, which makes up 614 square miles and also includes Coralville and North Liberty.

Iowa City was among Lawrence, Kansas, and Dorado, Puerto Rico, on Forbes' top 25 places to retire.

The Forbes list did not rank cities within the top 25 and listed them alphabetically.

Why did Forbes list Iowa City as one of the best places to retire?

It is one of the easiest places to afford a house on the list. The median home price is $285,000, which is 28% below the national average, according to Forbes. Iowans will start paying a flat income tax of 3.8% by next year and the state no longer taxes retirement income.

The ratio of primary care physicians per capita is high. There are multiple top-ranking hospitals in the area, according to Think Iowa City. The competition between area hospitals helps keep the cost of health care lower.

There is good air quality. The city also has a network of bike trails in the metro area and in Coralville. There are mountain bike trails as well.

It's not the first time that Iowa City has ranked well on a recent list of best places for retirees. Consumer Affairs ranked the city 14th on its 2023 list released in September. Des Moines ranked fourth on the list and Waterloo was 13th. Another study from Seniorly ranked Iowa as the best state to retire on a budget.

What else does Iowa City have to offer retirees?

For those looking to stay busy, Iowa City offers several community events. Some include the annual Downtown Block Party, Farm to Street Dinner, Northside Oktoberfest & Iowa City Brew Fest and more, according to Think Iowa City.

Downtown Iowa City offers more than 60 locally owned shops selling anything from vintage wear, to artisan finds. There are three museums including Stanley Museum of Art, the Old Capitol Museum and the Museum of Natural History.
