Elaine's Big Salad from 'Seinfeld'

I didn’t get bit by the Seinfeld bug until years after it aired, but once I was bit, I was bit. I'll admit that I'm one of the fans who found my way back via Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and now that I'm here, boy, does it feel good to be home.

The show about nothing seems to actually be about everything, and food just so happens to be a key element in some of the more iconic episodes. There’s Newman and the Kramer-turkey, you've got eating Snickers bars with forks, and—of course—the infamous “No Soup for You” for George and Elaine.

So with so many hilarious food moments in the series, when I found a recipe for a classic dish from the show online it was an absolute must-make. Originally printed in the official Seinfeld cookbook, Elaine's Big Salad caught my eye. Here's how it went when I gave it a try.

For the salad dressing, you’ll need the juice of one small lemon, Dijon mustard, extra-virgin olive oil, sea salt and pepper.

For the salad, you’ll need one large head of iceberg lettuce, one ripe avocado, hard-boiled eggs, cooked bacon, cooked shredded chicken, grape tomatoes and crumbled blue cheese.

How to Make Elaine’s Big Salad from 'Seinfeld'

Well, since it’s a salad, there’s nothing too complicated to it. To make the dressing, whisk the lemon juice, olive oil and Dijon mustard in a mixing bowl until smooth, then season to taste.

To make the salad, shred the lettuce and divide it between two salad bowls. Halve the cherry tomatoes and cut the avocado into chunks. (This guide to cutting avocados will make things a bit easier.) Slice the hard-boiled eggs into quarters and arrange them—as well as the tomatoes, bacon, chicken and blue cheese—on top of the lettuce. Drizzle with the dressing and you’re ready to dig in.

What I Thought About Elaine’s Big Salad from 'Seinfeld'

You really do need to split this salad up because it’s a lot to eat in one sitting, but boy is it enjoyable. There was no need for croutons because the crispy bacon added the perfect amount of crunch to each bite, the egg and blue cheese crumbles topped the salad nicely and the lemon juice complimented the Dijon mustard to make a perfect dressing. In fact, I will be borrowing this dressing recipe to use again in the future.

Tips for Making Elaine’s Big Salad from Seinfeld

1. Cut your hard boiled eggs into thin slices instead of into quarters. I found the quartered eggs to be a little bit awkward to eat, so next time I'll thinly slice them so they fit into the salad a little better. And if you’re boiling your own eggs for the salad, I recommend trying one of these convenient tricks to perfectly peeling the shells off your eggs.
