How to Use Liquid Bronzer

Bronzer addicts love the instant healthy glow that it delivers. Go with a powder formula and all it takes is a few strategic sweeps with a brush to apply. Liquid bronzer however, is a little bit more intimidating, even for bronzer aficionados. The advantage of a liquid formula is the lit-from-within-glow that looks more natural than powder. To find out how to apply liquid bronzer like a pro, I turned to the experts. Here are their 6 key tips.

Stay away from shimmer. “Avoid bronzers with a lot of glitter, it won’t look natural,” explains makeup artist Jamie Greenberg. Instead look for formulas with a subtle shimmer or a flat formula.

Place over liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer. To create the most natural look, always place bronzer over tinted moisturizer or foundation—never powder. “If you put it on top of powder you will get streaks,” warns Greenberg.

Basic application. Start by placing dots along the areas you would like extra color then blend with fingers or a stippling brush. “Apply to where the sun would hit your face, the bridge of your nose, cheeks, and around your hairline. You could also do some contouring in the hollows of your cheeks,” suggests Greenberg. Another option is to just keep the focus on the cheeks. “I suggest starting with a dab high on cheeks and blending in a downward direction,” explains makeup artist Robin Narvaez.

Pair with blush. For a little added vibrancy, Greenberg suggests applying bronzer to the apples of cheeks, blending upwards, and then layering cream blush on top.

Warm up your foundation. Our skin tone changes throughout the year, and often the perfect shade of foundation one month, may not be the right match the next. To warm up your foundation when you have been in the sun, Greenberg recommends adding a couple of drops of bronzer.

Brand picks. “I love Giorgio Armani Maestro Liquid Summer. They make a couple of shades that have more of a foundation consistency as opposed to a runny liquid,” says Narvaez. Greenberg recommends the Urban Decay Bronzing Beauty Balm or Soleil Tan de Chanel.
