A mom from Western Australia has revealed the household item that everyone forgets to clean after noticing it had built up a decade’s worth of filth.

Not once did she think about cleaning her TV remote in the 13 years since she bought her TV.

“Quite possibly 13 years of grime that I’ve never noticed,” she said, in shock over how much dirt came off when she wiped it down with a multi-purpose wipe, according to the Daily Mail.

Prior to wiping it down, the buttons on her remote were discolored to a light shade of brown and the whole remote had a layer of grease on it.

The mother’s discovery is a reminder to make sure you don’t overlook your remote when cleaning.

If you want to clean your remote quickly and effectively, Marla Mock, president of Molly Maid, told Today.com that all you’ll need is a cotton cloth, rubbing alcohol, a lint-free cloth and an optional toothpick.

It’s important to take the batteries out before you start cleaning, then you can get to wiping down the remote with rubbing alcohol on a microfiber cloth.

Once the sticky residue is gone, dry it with a clean and dry towel or cloth.

If there’s grime and filth inside the buttons, this is when you’d use the toothpick to remove it. Dry that with a lint-free cloth, put the batteries back in, and your remote is good to go.
