Hopewell, Grant's Headquarters: Earth Day event, free family-friendly programs, tours

HOPEWELL — The National Park Service is excited to announce a free community Earth Day event at Grant’s Headquarters in Hopewell. Join Petersburg National Battlefield on Saturday, April 20, the beginning of National Park Week, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a variety of activities and volunteer projects.

Earth Day is Monday, but the Petersburg National Battlefield's celebration begins early. They will have tours and hands-on activities from 1-4 p.m. The following nonprofit organizations will also participate: Friends of the Lower Appomattox River, Virginia Master Naturalists, Keep Hopewell Beautiful, Hopewell Recreation and Parks and the Virginia Association for Environmental Education.

Hopewell at historic City Point: Earth Day event schedule

10 - noon: Volunteer event with various projects including shoreline cleanup, vegetation trimming, tree planting, minor maintenance repairs

1 - 4 p.m.: Family-friendly programs with hands-on archeology and earth science activities, arts and crafts, nonprofit organization meet and greet, tours of Grant's Headquarters and Appomattox Manor

Earth Day is an annual, global celebration which encourages education and stewardship of the planet’s natural resources. This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics to build widespread awareness of the health risk and environmental impact of plastics and the larger goal to phase out single use plastics. There are everlasting impacts on marine and animal wildlife from plastics that have been broken down in oceans and along the shoreline.

Hopewell: Petersburg National Battlefield at City Point

Entrance to Petersburg National Battlefield at City Point and parking at the site are free. Grant's Headquarters is located at 1001 Pecan Avenue. Restrooms will be open to the public. Attendees should bring water, snacks, sun protection and wear comfortable clothing appropriate to the weather.
