Homeowners look to protect families, pets from coyotes — if HOAs allow it

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Dangerous encounters with coyotes across the Las Vegas valley have caught the attention of many concerned about the safety of their families and pets.

Some residents of the Green Valley community in Henderson have called the neighborhood a “haven for coyotes.” Others admit to being concerned that the animals roam the area. A local company, AR Iron, says it offers a solution.

According to the company, “coyote rollers” are a humane way for homeowners and renters to keep the creatures off their properties. Tony Sclafani, the general manager of AR Iron, said the product attaches to the top of residents’ fencing, spinning and rolling whenever a coyote tries to jump over it.

“They’ve got this rib lining on the aluminum, so it’s hard for animals to latch on with their hind legs and get over,” said Sclafani.

While coyote rollers aren’t cheap—prices reach $3,000 depending on product length—they are easy to dismantle and portable, allowing users to take them along to their next property. However, what seems like a simple, albeit costly, solution may not be so cut and dry. Sclafani said some homeowners associations—HOAs for short—have made moves to disallow these devices from the homes they oversee.

“It even went as far as Senator Menendez; he took it up to the state floor and tried to get legislation to allow these homeowners to have them on their property to protect their animals and their pets,” Sclafani said. “Unfortunately, it didn’t go any further than the state floor.”
