People are dyeing their hair to look like Halo Top ice cream

It’s probably safe to say that food-inspired hair color trends aren’t really groundbreaking, especially since you’ve probably seen chocolate chip cookie, Lacroix, and even Nutella-inspired hair color ideas take over Pinterest and Instagram. And even in terms of extreme shades, foodie looks always seem to trend, especially since salmon and Starburst (yes, you read that right) tones took the peach and rose gold color trend to a whole new level last year.

So far, 2018 is proving not to be too much different, especially since Halo Top hair color has emerged as the first extreme beauty trend of the new year. And unlike the trendy turquoise, pastel pink, and playful sunset tones that usually pop up during festival season, this wild color trend (which is super popular on Instagram) literally has colorists creating whimsical creations inspired by popular Halo Top ice cream flavors such as Birthday Cake, Rainbow Swirl, and Red Velvet, according to Allure. But despite it’s super-viral status on social media, Halo Top hair color is just a small snippet of what’s to come this year, as expert colorists say there are other crazy and colorful hues we’ll want to keep an eye on.

Alongside possibly seeing more food-inspired styles, Catie McGowan Hansen, director of education at Affinage Salon Professional, says that color trends will also be influenced by items in the world around us. These include nature’s flowers, as well as metals, designs, and techniques mimicking patterns found inside fabrics. McGowan Hansen states that some of these shades include much more muted pastels inspired by macarons and sea-glass hair color, which combines a swirl of gorgeous oceanic tones. But don’t think these colors are anything like last year’s unicorn trend, as despite being totally eye-catching, they still prove to be a lot more wearable for people of all ages.

Special color effects are also something to look out for in 2018, as Australian Manic Panic stylist Mykey O’Halloran says that head-scratching techniques such as hair tattooing (aka undercut designs), color banding, and glow-in-the-dark (black light) hair will definitely be trends to watch in the coming year.

To see what tones are on tap for 2018, keep scrolling to learn which crazy colors are set to take center stage, according to color experts McGowan Hansen and O’Halloran.
