Hallelujah — Miley Wore (Hot Pink Glittery) Clothes

Miley Cyrus has never been one to cultivate an air of mystery. She’s worn pasties on Jimmy Kimmel, paint in Paper mag, and once, memorably, she used little more than a pig to cover her junk. It’s gotten to the point where most peoples’ reaction to her latest dishabille ensemble is less pearl-clutchy and more “put it away, Miley.” What’s a provocateur to do? Easy — wear clothes.

Last night, we had a rare sighting of Miley Cyrus fully clothed, and it was glorious. Performing at Carnegie Hall as part of the ONE Campaign’s concert for World AIDS Day, Miley’s outfit was a two-piece, glittery suit in Pepto Bismol pink, which we loved from the yoked detail on the jacket, to the rhinestone-crusted belt. It was all very ‘70s Nashville, like something Dolly Parton would have worn on the Porter Wagoner show. In all its sublime, sparkly tackiness, it was the distaff version of one of Gram Parson’s Nudie suits.

We’re also reading a deeper significance into the color of her suit. Hot pink has been associated with the gay liberation movement since pink triangles were used to identify gay prisoners in Nazi Germany. Later, gay activist group ACT UP adopted the pink triangle and the slogan “Silence = Death” in their fight to bring awareness to HIV and AIDS in the ‘80s, when the topic was considered so taboo that President Reagan refused to even say the word “AIDS” until 1985, when the disease had already claimed thousands.

We’re not against Miley’s penchant for showing off her body, but it’s become so old hat, that this look — and its political significance — are a beyond-refreshing change. This is the kind of statement we’d love to see way more of from Miley. And with her slicked-back hair festooned with pink glitter, we’re also calling it now — this is the next big Tumblr hair trend. Kudos, Miley.
