Mobile Suit Gundam SEED is getting a new movie next year, decades after the series first aired, and Sunrise has started to amp up its marketing for the film. In a new video released on Twitter earlier this week, the production studio revealed a nostalgic new theme song for the upcoming film.

The new video shows a young boy handing a cute little bird to a girl on the beach, before cutting away to a montage of robots battling in space and beating each other up in ruined cities, characters looking at things just out of frame, and a giant airship. It’s pretty fun, but the best part is the song that’s playing.

It’s called Freedom, and it’s being performed by Takanori Nishikawa – also known as TM Revolution – who previously performed the main themes for Gundam SEED and its spinoff and sequel series. Tetsuya Komuro, one of the most successful music producers in Japan, also helped to produce the song, after having previously contributed his song Beyond the Time to Gundam: Char’s Counterattack, a 1988 anime film.

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom is a new film in the Gundam SEED continuity, set about one year after the events of sequel series SEED Destiny. The film was initially written by Chiaki Morosawa and her husband Mitsuo Fukuda back in 2006, but production on it was halted after Morosawa fell ill. Morosawa unfortunately passed away in 2016, and Bandai Namco pulled together staff from previous series and more modern series to finish the film, with Fukuda directing the film.

Gundam SEED first premiered back in 2002, where it quickly became one of the most popular Gundam projects to date. To this day it remains one of the most popular series in the franchise, at least in Japan, so fans are very excited about its return.

It comes after one of Gundam’s most popular series was announced to be returning, with the announcement of a new Iron Blooded Orphans movie based on a now-terminated mobile spinoff game.
