Keeping some kind of performance journal in order to progress any skill isn’t exactly an earth-shattering idea. Even the Average Joe who’s serious about improving his surfing has been given the suggestion and probably tried it in some form. Most of us do it in the most analog way, of course, pulling out a handwritten journal right after a session and jotting down some notes.

John John Florence isn’t an Average Joe though. His approach to this practice is a bit more involved.

Here, Florence shows how he goes about keeping a video journal to track different equipment. As you’d guess, the guy always has new boards to test, new fins, and an almost endless number of variables for how each can be paired. To get even more specific, Florence doesn’t just come out of the water with a handful of generic notes about each. He actually sets out before his session with something specific he wants to give attention to. This video is just comparing two sessions at home where he tests out new fins.

The current world number three isn’t the first person to do something like this but for gear geeks and progression junkies who like to track such things, seeing how a two-time world champion approaches the “practice” aspect of surfing is interesting. Who knows? You might pick up a trick or two…even if you don’t have your own personal videographer every session.
