Glenn County Fair highlights country fun

Country Fun for Everyone is the welcoming theme for this year’s Glenn County Fair on May 16-19 at the Fairgrounds, 221 E. Yolo St., Orland.

“We are excited for everyone to experience our fantastic lineup this year,” said Fair CEO Kathy Bartels. “Brimming with outstanding local and visiting entertainment, destruction derby hosted by Moondog Motorsports, canine show, strolling performers, pig races, train rides, livestock shows and auction and much more.”

One of the highlights of the four-day events is the annual Fair Parade sponsored by the Orland Chamber of Commerce, which is scheduled for 10 a.m., Saturday, May 18 starting at the Fire Station on Fifth Street and marching down Fourth Street to the fairgrounds on Yolo Street.

“Get ready for a spectacle of color, music and community spirit,” Bartels added.

Previous to the parade, the fair opens at 4 p.m. Thursday, May 16 with the National Anthem, train rides, pig races, a strolling juggler, and the carnival at 5 p.m.

On Friday the fair opens at 2 p.m. with many of the same features, including fair food, the carnival opening at 3 p.m. and live performances at 7 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. by Stringtown Road at the Bandshell.

The fun continues on Saturday, May 18 with the doors opening at 12 p.m. and the carnival at 1 p.m. Some of the day’s highlights in conjunction with the daily fare will be the Miss Glenn County Princesses contest, destruction derby on the racetrack, Max Minardi Band at Bandshell, along with performances by One of These Nights, an Eagles tribute band, also at the Bandshell.

Daily the doors of the fair’s Flaherty Hall exhibition building will open to floriculture and artwork, quilts, fresh produce, and more.

One of the most popular features of a county fair is the livestock exhibitions, shows and auction.

On May 16 and 17, youth handlers will show their animals, including swine, beef, dairy, goats, lambs, rabbits and poultry to a panel of judges who will be looking for the best animals and showmanship in each class. In the meantime, the independent, 4-H and FFA members will be grooming and preparing their livestock for fair visitors to see and enjoy and to put their best foot, hoof or paw, forward for the live auction.

On Saturday, May 18 all that work will culminate in the Brawley Ring with the annual Jr. Livestock Sale starting at 9 a.m., and the sale of champions at 2 p.m. Throughout the day, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. will be an FFA Silent Auction near the Brawley Ring.

The last day of the fair will be Sunday, May 19 featuring the Hispanic Music Festival.

“The fair is your ticket to adventure, laughter and memories,” Bartels said. “Whether you’re a music enthusiast, an animal lover, or simply looking for a fun day out with family and friends, there’s something for everyone.”

Glenn County Fair Board members are President Candice Pierce, Vice President Ray Mudd, Shannon Douglas, Geoff Bitle and Jacob Chavez.
