Audiences are finally getting their hands on Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire and the first reactions say it's "overstuffed", "frustrating", and "a bit of a mess".
Following on from the 2021 film Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Frozen Empire sees Ghostbusters old and new joining forces to protect their city and save the world from a second ice age.
Critics got a chance to see the film ahead of release, and the consensus is it's a bit of fun but with not much substance that's trying to do too much.
Here's a closer look at what people are saying fresh out of early screenings.
#GhostbustersFrozenEmpire has tons of ghosts, and even more family drama. The final act is terrifying. But unfortunately the story is overstuffed and lacks substantial character development. Kumail Nanjiani and James Acaster delight in new roles, and Paul Rudd is daddy as always. pic.twitter.com/vRlwtfL9SK

While I didn't enjoy it as much as Ghostbusters: Afterlife (I know I'm an outlier there), I still had fun with #GhostbustersFrozenEmpire https://t.co/uyUoFMxya5

There’s lots of fun with #GhostbustersFrozenEmpire but its focus is in all the wrong places, is over-stuffed with too many ideas that don’t gel and dialogue is poor. Still, Grace and Rudd provide strong turns and it’s more reminiscent of the cartoon series in its tone. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ pic.twitter.com/Lg0Q5Q4yvT

#GhostbustersFrozenEmpire feels like it’s trying to cram three movies into one. The main villain’s design is awesome & Kumail Nanjiani is hilarious, but the story & dialogue are weak. The main cast feels underutilized & they don’t explore the new revelations on a deeper level. pic.twitter.com/MKtzm7K9v0

#GhostbustersFrozenEmpire is an entertaining but frustrating mixed bag. Stripping the family drama from Afterlife and substituting for a saturday cartoon delight (which is fun) Ghost are great, Grace is AWESOME, I had fun but I wanted more... pic.twitter.com/x5hQYd67YC

#GhostbustersFrozenEmpire succeeds from a nostalgic standpoint, but the inciting incident doesn’t make complete sense, and the resolution even less. The whole felt inconsequential and just another excuse to use these actors while they’re still willing to put on the suit again. pic.twitter.com/m7xsDn0od4

Super excited that somebody remembered Ghostbusters movies are supposed to be funny. #GhostbustersFrozenEmpire made me laugh, it has jokes. The plot's a bit of a mess but I had fun and that's all I ask from a Ghostbusters movie. pic.twitter.com/2gQ4nVuEkh

I had a lot of fun with #GhostbustersFrozenEmpire!
I enjoyed it more than Afterlife, and thought the family dynamic was good. Film also included some interesting lore bits regarding modern day ghostbusting.
Mckenna Grace and Paul Rudd were the standouts for sure. pic.twitter.com/ZYRtvIthio— Russ Milheim - The Direct (@RussMilheim) March 20, 2024
Right now, the film has a rotten rating of 45% from 42 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a 20% drop from its predecessor.
