Georgia Rescue Shares Heartbreaking Ways Dogs Wound up in the Shelter

There are many reasons why pets, especially dogs, end up in shelters, and it's not always due to the owner surrendering. Regardless of the reasoning, it is heartbreaking to see how many of them end up in shelters nationwide.

The Georgia rescue, Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue, shared in their video posted on August 28 the many reasons dogs end up in shelters. Let's find out more!

This is so sad!

However, certain reasons are understandable, such as health problems or allergies.

Sometimes, owners could develop allergies to their dogs' dander, saliva, or even urine, which can range from mild discomfort to severe reactions. Depending on the severity of the allergy, owners may feel that surrendering the dog is the only solution to alleviate their symptoms.

Other reasons include the owner developing health problems or, worse, passing away. And if there are no family members or friends who can take the dog in, it ends up in the shelter, which is always the saddest, as dogs grieve just like us humans.

At other times, dogs end up in shelters due to their owners' lack of time. Dogs require time, attention, and care. If an owner's lifestyle changes significantly, such as with a new job with longer hours or other responsibilities, they may no longer have the time necessary to properly care for their dog's physical and emotional needs.

Then there are dogs who are found as strays on the streets, without any identification or microchips. These dogs might have gotten lost, escaped, or been abandoned by their owners. Or they get picked up by animal control and brought to shelters if their owners can't be located. This can happen if a dog is involved in an incident, or if it's in violation of local ordinances.

Some dogs end up in animal shelters because they have "too much energy" compared to what is suitable for households with young children. Or if the dog wants to be the only "child" in the household and wouldn't get along with another pet or kids around.

Sadly, there are also dogs that end up in shelters because they "outgrew" their puppy phase, were left "to fend for themselves," or because their owner is a cat person.

As you can see, there are many reasons why dogs end up in shelters, as owning a dog comes with a lot of responsibilities, emotionally, physically, and financially. And sometimes life happens where these responsibilities sadly don't align with the priorities a dog owner has.
