Sandstone nails, anyone?

Spring's go-to nail color is gearing up to be stone gray. The nail trend, originally created by Alix Earle, has found its way onto the fingertips of TikTokers and celebs alike. Despite the countless videos of the shade, no one seems to be as big of a fan of the trend as Gabrielle Union-Wade. Right after the trend made its TikTok debut, Union-Wade wore it in the form of French tips. Now, she was just seen sporting the look in a new, lighter variety.

On March 16, Union-Wade was at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, to attended the premiere of Anne Hathaway's new movie The Idea of You, for which she's a producer. She kept it rather minimalistic with an all-black outfit and a light stone mani—a sandstone mani, if you will.

To go with her knee-length black formal shorts, sleeveless blazer, and pointy-toe kitten heels, Union-Wade painted all her nails the color of pebbles on a beach, and we are so obsessed.

On top of medium-length, almond-shaped nails, each of her nails coordinated with the same color. At first glance, it looked like a classic, cool-toned nude. However, once you stare a little longer, you realize it's actually a taupe-y, light gray hue with the slightest of blue undertones. Basically, the same hue as the darker grains of sand by the ocean or, weirdly, cement sidewalks—obviously, in the most chic way possible. The light stone hue was sealed in and finished with a high-gloss finish.

Luckily for us, a manicure as classic as this is super easy to recreate at home, plus you probably have all the materials you need already. Ahead, the step-by-step to recreate it perfectly.

First, as with any nail look, remove any lingering nail polish with remover. Then, cut and file your nails to the desired length and shape—this would also be the time to apply any tips or press-ons if you desire. After that, buff the surface for an even nail bed before applying your favorite base coat and letting it dry.

With your nails prepped, it's time for your sandstone-esque polish. For this step, we recommend a color like Olive & June's AW ($9) or OPI's Taupe-less Beach ($12). Then, seal in the color with your favorite top coat, let dry, and add a dollop of nail oil. Then, you will have a fresh take on stone nails.
