Funcom Says Dune Awakening Isn’t ‘Sexy’ Enough For Endowment Sliders

Funcom, makers of Conan Exile, are making the Dune Awakening MMO game, and while it looks pretty slick so far, it’s missing one thing: An endowment slider. “Why is this a thing?” You might ask yourself, and if so, you must not have been on the internet in 2017.

Conan Exile made headlines with its genital slider for male and female characters, and the fact that you start the game nude, combined with Exile’s realistic physics engine, made easy fuel for gifs, memes, and brief NSFW videos for months after the game launched. Dune Awakening, however, does not. PCGamer asked Awakening’s executive producer Scott Junior why during the 2024 Game Developers Conference. Junior said Funcom wanted to stick to the feeling of Dune, which doesn’t include customizing giant, swinging appendages that aren’t your arms and legs.

“Dune's not as… sexy? As Conan Exiles,” Junor said. “That's not one of the main, I would say… pillars of the IP. So we want to focus more on the Dune things than what we were doing in Conan Exiles. It was a pretty conscious decision at the start to focus more on Dune than the savage, sexy world of Conan.”

So it looks like you’ll have to stick to sand worm jokes in the sci-fi game and be content with that. Granted, it doesn’t sound like Dune Awakening’s sand worms are much to joke about. From what we’ve seen and played of the upcoming MMO, surviving the desert and its giant worm inhabitants is serious business.

Dune Awakening will launch for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, though Funcom doesn’t have a release date or window yet.
