Free skin cancer screenings available Thursday

May 6—HIGH POINT — With summer quickly approaching, May is a good time to evaluate the health of your skin.

Dermatologists from Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist will offer free skin cancer screenings to the public this week in High Point and Winston-Salem. The screenings will be offered Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Dermatology — Palladium, 5286 Samet Drive in High Point, and at Dermatology — Country Club, 4618 Country Club Road in Winston-Salem.

No insurance or appointment is required, and anyone can receive either a spot check or a more thorough screening for skin cancer, said Dr. Lindsay Strowd, dermatologist at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and associate professor and interim chair of dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

"This is a great opportunity, especially if you have never had a skin screening or if it's been some time since your last exam," Strowd said. "This is the perfect time to get a basic exam. In past screenings, we have identified many skin cancers, along with abnormal moles and pre-cancerous spots. This is a great way to make sure your skin is healthy and give you peace of mind before heading into summer."

According to the American Cancer Society, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer, and nearly all skin cancers can be treated effectively if they are found early.

"As we approach summer and warmer weather, don't forget to wear sunscreen, stay hydrated and protect your skin if you are going to be outside in the sun for long periods of time," Strowd said.
