Free boating courses offered to be water-safe

As warmer weather returns to the QCA, so do the number of boaters to area waters.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is offering free boating safety education classes during the month of April. From novices to seasoned boaters, anyone wanted to learn about or brush up on safe boating knowledge can take the course. No on-the-water experience is offered during the classroom-based course. Participants 12 and over who complete a course and pass the final exam will be issued an Illinois Department of Natural Resources Boat Safety Certification, which is honored in both Iowa and Illinois.

Classes are open to anyone 11 or older, and will be offered on the following dates at the Mississippi River Project Office from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.:

  • Saturday, April 13

  • Saturday, April 20

  • Saturday, April 27

Preregistration is required, and those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited, and classes fill quickly. For more information, click here.
