Former McDonald's Chef Claims This Fan-Favorite Grocer Sells the Best Version of the Chain's Hash Browns

McDonald's

We’ve all had those moments where you’re mid-way through your less-than-exciting bowl of oatmeal, and like a bolt of lightning, a craving for breakfast from McDonald’s hits. It’s like you can almost taste the syrupy, sweet Sausage McGriddle, juxtaposed by the crispy, salty goodness of those impossibly perfect hash browns (we’ll take two.) The only problem is you have a meeting in 10 minutes, and by the time the meeting is over, breakfast is no longer being served for the day. Aye caramba!

Of course, you could choose to get your breakfast delivered, but that can get pricey in the long run — and let’s not even get started on the pains of waiting in the drive-thru line. While it might seem like you’re stuck with your run-of-the-mill bowl of oatmeal and a delicious breakfast from those famous Golden Arches is just outside of your grasp, we’ve got the inside scoop on how to whip up those crave-worthy hash browns from the comfort of your own home. And it requires nothing more than a trip to your local Aldi.

Former McDonald’s corporate chef, @chefmikeharacz, did the leg work for us and found Aldi’s most delicious dupe to date. In a recent and extensive investigation of which frozen hash browns come closest to the chain's, the TikToker concluded that the Season's Choice Hash Browns Patties from Aldi are your best bet when the hankering for hash browns strikes.

In order to make this deduction, Haracz compared the ingredients and nutrition facts of hash browns from Mickey D’s with those of the ones at various other retailers, and the ones at Aldi are almost identical. Of course, they’re not exactly the same, but the chef mentions that they come pretty close. To get them closest to the OG version, Haracz recommends deep frying the delicious potato patties for the best result (bonus points if you fry them in beef fat.)

The viral video racked up more than 628,000 views, and fans were quick to reaffirm the TikToker’s findings. “I cook them in the air fryer. So good!” said one person. “Aldi hash browns are my go-to!! 👏👏” exclaimed another.

Fortunately, the chef continues to share replicas for all things McDonald’s — including a Big Mac Sauce dupe you can find at Walmart — and we can’t wait to give them all a try. Hash browns not really your thing? Then maybe the dupe for a Sausage McGriddle is more your speed.
