Food Editor Review: We Tried the Spicy New McDonald's Sandwich Everyone's Talking About

Yesterday, McDonald’s dropped some major news: They are adding two new chicken sandwiches to their menu for a limited time. If you’ve been on TikTok in the past 24 hours, you probably already knew this because it seems like everyone is talking about it. “McDonald’s new sandwich” was even a top trending search on TikTok when I was scrolling in bed last night. The new sandwiches are called the Bacon Cajun Ranch McCrispy and the Bacon Cajun Ranch Deluxe McCrispy and when I woke up today, I knew I had a mission to try out the latest viral sensation.

The Bacon Cajun Ranch McCrispy and the Bacon Cajun Ranch Deluxe McCrispy are, essentially, the same sandwich, but the Deluxe version comes with lettuce and tomato. McDonald’s describes the new menu addition as “inspired by soul food flavors of the South, with a bold, creamy and spicy Cajun ranch sauce, applewood smoked bacon and crisp crinkle cut pickles, all served on a warm toasted potato roll.”

As soon as lunchtime rolled around, I went over to McDonald’s and ordered the new Bacon Cajun Ranch Deluxe McCrispy sandwich. Here’s what the meal looked like when I brought it home.

At first glance, it looked a little lackluster, but I hoped that the flavor would be better than the presentation.

Fortunately, I was not let down. The first thing that stood out to me was the difference in the bacon compared to the bacon you receive on a McDonald’s burger. The bacon on the new Bacon Cajun Ranch Deluxe McCrispy was a thicker-cut bacon and felt a little more high-end than traditional fast-food bacon. The sandwich was loaded with a spicy, but not too spicy sauce and didn’t feel dry. The only part of the new sandwich that was truly disappointing was the potato bun. It could have just been the particular bun I was served, but it was dry and tasted like it had been sitting around for months.

Overall, I would give McDonald’s new Bacon Cajun Ranch Deluxe McCrispy chicken sandwich a 7/10, but I definitely had to deduct a full point for that uninspired bun. I still wouldn’t call this gourmet by any means, but for a fast-food chicken sandwich, this is a pretty good one.
