Tankinis are back on trend, and whether you love them or hate them, we’re going to talk about them. TikTok is divided over this trend, with comments like, “Proud tankini hater,” and “I didn’t spend hundreds of dollars on bikinis for tankinis to be a trend, sorry, bye,” flooding the social feeds. But, then others can’t stop singing their praises, with people exclaiming, “They’re so cute!,” as well as “I feel like a cool mom in a tankini” and, one 38-year-old who’s had two boys and prefers something with a bit more coverage writing,  “I’ve been rocking mine every summer.”

Clearly, this one’s divisive. So, what’s the deal, and do you need a tankini for summer 2024? I say yes, and here’s why.

For those who find bikinis to be too revealing but hate the look or feel of a classic, full-coverage one-piece, tankinis strike the perfect balance. Not only are they a more modest option, but they’re also incredibly flattering, with a variety of different styles available — including halter tops, shirred waists, and low-cut necklines. You can pick and choose what works for you, with some styles offering more coverage and others less, for a sexier approach. With all of them, though, you can pick the degree of belly exposure. Love!

As a 2000s kid, I’m obviously a huge fan. Tankinis offer ideal stomach coverage, which allows me to feel less self-conscious when near the water. Plus, it can also double as a shirt when you’re out and about, and, given the coverage, you won’t need to use quite as much sunscreen to prevent a tummy burn (however, that doesn’t mean you can avoid it entirely!)

So, if you’re looking for a tankini to see what the TikTok debate is all about, keep reading for some of my personal favorites. Even if this trend isn’t up your alley, I have a feeling once you try it, you’ll be more for it than against it.

Tommy Hilfiger Tankini Swimsuit Top

Since we’re throwing it way back to the 2000s, it only feels right to purchase a Tommy Hilfiger swimsuit (#tommygirl, IYKYK). This particular one features a halter top that elongates the torso and accentuates the shoulders and neckline. There’s also a shirred waist, along with removable cups (practical!) and a tie-closure, so you can customize how you wear it.

Summersalt the Cinched Tankini Top

Summersalt

Not only are Summersalt swimsuits incredibly high quality (seriously, mine has lasted over five years), but they’re also comfortable for all-day wear. So, if you’re planning a beach vacation, water park visit, or cruise and need something that won’t come undone, this tankini is for you. It’s a great neutral option available in green and black, with a cute front-tie that’s super flattering, adjustable straps, and built-in cups.

Another advantage of tankinis is that they offer a bit more sun protection. This stretchy twist-front tankini top from Tommy Bahama has adjustable straps and an underwire, ensuring support no matter what the day brings — whether it’s cannonballs or chasing after the kids.

Oséree Lumière O-Gem Metallic Bikini

This metallic two-piece set from Italian brand Oséree is definitely a splurge, but you’ll be wearing it for years to come. And just because it’s a tankini doesn’t mean you have to sit out on hot-girl summer — it has a high-cut leg and an adjustable halter neckline.

Tempt Me Two Piece Bathing Suit

Amazon

The best thing about this Tempt Me two-piece set is that the halter straps are removable, so you can wear it as a strapless tube top if you please. There are 12 designs to choose from, so whether you want a basic black swimsuit or something more fun like a leopard print, there’s one for you.
