First graders learn about farming firsthand

May 11—JEFFERSON — More than 900 first graders from all over Ashtabula County were treated to a wide variety of unique experiences during Ag Day 2024 on Friday at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds.

Julie Wayman, coordinator of the event for the Ashtabula County Extension Agency, said 910 students from the county's elementary schools were present, and learned about a variety of opportunities.

She said the event is made possible by extensive cooperation between the extension office, the Ashtabula County Farm Bureau, the county school districts and many agricultural-related businesses.

The children got to see bees up close through a glass window, learn how to milk a cow and pet animals at the event. One of the more popular opportunities included a free milkshake as well.
