Brunswick Today Newsletter: The latest on a live music venue and the fun of trying

Hello and welcome to the Brunswick Today newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter Jamey Cross.

I wish I was a crafty person. Over the years, I've valiantly attempted some small craft projects to little success. Still, it's so fun to try.

Most recently, I purchased a block of air-dry clay, a roller and cutting tools to attempt to make my version of an incense holder I saw for sale at a boutique in Charlotte. It's a thought process I've had many times in the past: I see something, think it's overpriced and would be simple enough to make myself. (Spoiler: I should have just paid the $25.)

After a half hour of rolling and carving and rerolling and carving again, trying to get the clay in the shape I desired, the ball of clay ended up in my trashcan.

My grandmother, on the other hand, has dabbled in countless crafty activities, including collage, pottery, sketching, painting -- oil, watercolor and acrylic, on canvass and paper -- and, most recently, crochet. She learned a simple pattern for crochet washcloths one day and was in need of more yarn a few days later, a stack of completed cloths beside her.

Plans for an outdoor music venue in rural Brunswick County garnered some concern from area residents earlier this year, but following the approval of a special-use permit, construction on the project is expected to begin soon. I met with the owners of Cumberland Woods to get all the details. Here's the story.

Brunswick County residents won't have to drive quite as far for license plate and registration services. Following a months-long closure, a license plate agency in Shallotte reopened on May 23. From reporter Madison Lipe, here are the details.
