Construction on Brunswick County’s second Hobby Lobby location is seemingly underway, but when the craft store may be open for business is still unknown.

In the fall of 2023, Hobby Lobby leased a space at the Live Oak Village shopping center located 4961 Long Beach Road. Sitting between Southport and Oak Island, the property lies in the county’s zoning jurisdiction.

According to Brunswick County permit records, various permits have been approved for the project this year. A county code administration project summary sheet details a nearly $3.5 million alteration of the single-story building for the space leased by Hobby Lobby.

The Hobby Lobby store will occupy two large spaces, a 40,945-square foot space previously occupied by Lowes Foods and a 12,000-square foot space previously occupied by Peebles department store.

A building permit was approved by the county in late April authorizing a “commercial up fit/remodel” of the existing space. The permit details the to-be-renovated space totaling nearly 53,000 square feet.

The summary sheet also indicates a preconstruction meeting was conducted between the project’s general contractor, project manager, county staff and others on April 18.

Hobby Lobby is a craft supplies and home décor store. This location will be the county’s second; its current location is in the Shallotte Crossing Shopping Center, located off Main Street in Shallotte. Nearby New Hanover County has a Hobby Lobby at Hanover Center on Oleander Drive in Wilmington.
