Over the last decade or so, game sizes have just been getting bigger and bigger. It makes sense, as the assets get bigger, while developers chase higher fidelity, longer games with more voice acting, and orchestral soundtracks in the biggest games. The next big Final Fantasy game seems to take the cake, though, with an absolutely whopping install size.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the follow-up to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, is set to be released exclusively on PS5 later this month, and it’s going to be a chunky one. According to the PlayStation Game Size Twitter account, which is said to get file sizes by scraping PlayStation Store servers, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be 145.35 GB in size, which is absolutely massive.

To put it into context, the original Final Fantasy 7 is about 3.5 GB on PC and Switch – Sony doesn’t list install sizes itself on the PlayStation store – while Crisis Core is 14 GB on Switch and about 30 GB on PC. Final Fantasy 7 Remake itself takes up about 100GB on PC, so Rebirth is at least 50% bigger in terms of install size.

We did have a few clues that Rebirth might be bigger than the average PS5 game before this, though. Last year it was announced that the game would be the first to ship on two PS5 discs instead of one, with each PS5 disc able to hold about 100 GB of data.

Still, it’s a lot of storage space to dedicate to just one game. The PS5, in theory, ships with 825 GB of storage space, but after system files and a few other things that take up necessary space, the console only has a little over 650 GB of usable storage space. Rebirth will take up almost a quarter of that space, massively limiting how much else you can install.

At the very least, it’s so far looking like it’ll be worth it. We’ve seen trailers packed with secrets for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and pretty much every piece of marketing we’ve seen for it has gotten us even more excited.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be released on PS5 on February 29, 2024.
