Fascinating Video Shows How Aquarium Staff Weigh Their Resident Octopus

If you're someone who loves animals and wants to turn that love into a career, you're not alone. Those who do the best work truly care about what they do, and that's important when dealing with living beings. After all, you wouldn't want to hire a zookeeper or pet sitter who doesn't care about the animal they're looking after, would you?

For folks who are interested in aquatic life like sharks, jellyfish, and octopuses (yes, that is also the correct plural term for 'octopus') jobs at the local aquarium may be of interest. From educating visitors as a tour guide to working hands-on with the fish and animals, there are so many ways you can get your foot in the door. And if you're interested in working at (or even just visiting) an aquarium, you'll love the behind-the-scenes sneak peek that one California aquarium posted in late November. They're showing viewers how they weigh their resident octopus--which is just as chaotic as it sounds!

LOL! This giant Pacific octopus named Goji is so beautiful, but she's also full of personality. Just look at her playing hard to get when she's trained to go into the laundry basket! It reminds me of a dog going limp and acting like dead weight when they don't want to be picked up, and it's such a gift to witness.

Even though this is quite a process for the octopus and her handler, no one had to be as patient as the narrator of @aquariumpacific's video. Her slow talking while the octopus got settled in the bucket made me actually laugh out loud! As the aquarium wrote in reply to a commenter, the octopus thinks it's "playtime, not weigh time." She's such a curious animal!

Octopi are Known for Being Curious, Playful Escape Artists

In fact, this is pretty stereotypical octopus behavior! As commenter @amphibianreptilecenter shared that octopi "remind me so much of toddlers. They must touch everything. It's adorable." It really is! I remember visiting the Seattle Aquarium at least ten years ago when one of the aquarists was installing a new security measure on their octopus's tank. The infamous Fifi had recently escaped, and she remembered exactly how she did it. Luckily, they caught her before the unique aquarium animal left the tank the second time around!

As for Goji and her marine animal friends at the aquarium in Long Beach, no one has reportedly escaped. Even so, the animals' caretakers know what to keep an eye out for, but for now they'll keep giving her regular checkups to ensure she's a healthy, growing gal!
