Faith Time: The need to pray

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Faith Time is our weekly conversation on matters of faith. Joining us this morning is Pastor Lee Merck with Dauphin Way Baptist Church. We wanted to talk about the power of prayer. What is the power of prayer to you?

Guest: Well, it’s interesting because a lot of times people will say prayer is powerful. Yes. And I think I think we all kind of know what we mean by that. But the reality is that spiritual power for answered prayer is not inherent within us. It’s not in the words that we say. It’s not even in the prayers that we pray. It’s in the God to whom we pray. And so God will answer our prayers and respond to us. And He will meet our needs for our good and for his glory.

Anchor: So you have a sermon series called The Master Plan for Prayer. Why is this such a rich topic for study?

Guest: It’s a rich topic for study because oftentimes we talk more about prayer than actually participating in prayer. And the disciples themselves came to Jesus and said, Lord, teach us to pray, which means that prayer is something to be learned and to be put into practice.

Anchor: How do we gauge the effectiveness of prayer?

Guest: That’s an interesting question as well. I think, first of all, we gauge the effectiveness of prayer just by whether or not a person is praying. If we define prayer as hearing from God and talking with God, then the success is in the relationship that is ongoing. And then secondly, I would say obviously answered prayer is a way to gauge the effectiveness of prayer.
