Facebook's $725 Million Lawsuit Settlement: How to Claim Your Portion

Facebook (current and former) users, there's no time to waste—there are only three days left to find out if you quality for a part of the tech giant's $725 million lawsuit settlement.

The deadline to file a claim in the class action lawsuit the social media company agreed to settle earlier this year is listed as Friday, August 25, 2023. Patrons can file claims via mail, with a postmark by the date mentioned, or file online by Aug. 25 at 11:59 PM PT.

Facebook parent company Meta previously agreed to pay the sum in order to settle claims it allowed people’s personal data to be shared with third parties. The most famous entity to get access was Cambridge Analytica, a consulting firm that supported Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. While Meta agreed to the payout, it denies any wrongdoing.

The only requirement to qualify for a piece of the proverbial pie is that you must have been a user of the social media platform over the last several years. “If you were a Facebook user in the United States between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, inclusive, you may be eligible for a cash payment,” according to the settlement details, which reportedly affects millions of Americans.

People who deleted their Facebook accounts during the qualifying time period may also be eligible, however they will likely receive smaller payments, as each user's payout is dependent, in part, upon how long the account in question remained active.

Another factor which will determine how much each person is paid out depends on how many ways the settlement must ultimately be split. The more people who apply, the less each individual payout will be.

Though it remains unclear when payouts may start getting dispersed, an additional court date has been set for Sept. 7, so it would not be until after then.
