There’s a new “It” bag on the horizon, and according to the Lyst Index, it’s been a major driver in elevating Saint Laurent as one of the top five hottest brands of 2024. Saint Laurent’s Le 5 à 7 bag, available in a variety of sizes, colors, and finishes, hits all the right notes for shoppers with its minimalist silhouette that’s functional, timeless, and supremely versatile. We’ve seen an explosion of nostalgia for ’90s minimalism recently as a healthy exhale from previous logomania trends from the early aughts. Echoing the Baguette and designer shoulder bags of the decade, the Saint Laurent Le 5 à 7 bag collection exudes quiet luxury and feels like it could seamlessly fit onto the arm of ’90s-era Christy Turlington, but also feels right at home in Kaia Gerber’s it-girl ensembles for a coffee run.

More from WWD

Celebrities from Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, and Hailey Bieber have all been seen slinging varieties of the collection in recent months. Hailey Bieber styled her small Le 5 à 7 Soft Hobo for a dinner date with a silky pink slip dress, while Selena Gomez was seen slinging her Le 5 à 7 Hobo all over Paris with a cropped button-down and tailored pants. With 4 million views and searches on TikTok, the medium-sized hobo-style iteration has officially “gone viral”. Swift, who’s known to shy away from labels, was photographed wearing the Le 5 à 7 Soft Hobo in her fall-hued outfit — spacious enough slinger for the songstress to stash lyrics for a forthcoming album. We’ve seen the larger iteration of the Le 5 à 7 Soft Hobo also on Rosé, one-fourth of the global girl group BlackPink, on the streets of New York paired with jeans and a bejeweled top.

There are several versions of the Saint Laurent Le 5 à 7 bag: the Le 5 à 7 Hobo, the Le 5 à 7 Soft Hobo, and the Le 5 à 7 Mini Hobo. Three mini and standard silhouettes come as a slouchy bags, soft tote leather totes, and a structured, rectangle-shaped handbag. Alongside the structured one is a mini bag version that’s ideal for a night out. We love the larger tote for every day, especially if you’re looking for work bag you can carry on your commute, or as a carry-on for travel. Another companion bag, the Bea, features expandable sides as the biggest iteration in the collection.

The focal point of the bag is the instantly recognizable gold YSL logo, which doubles as a clasp. The hardware emblem shines against the simple design of the bag, and with an open top, it’s accessible to grab your essentials. Every iteration of the style is lined in luxe suede, while the slew of finish options include satin, soft suede, grained leather, smooth leather, and patent leather, as well as canvas, raffia, and embossed crocodile. The most delicate, the padded lambskin, is available in the Le 5 à 7 Soft Hobo and Le 5 à 7 Hobo. We’ve seen red-hued collections make a big splash this season, and the Saint Laurent Le 5 à 7 bag has followed suit, showcasing a beautiful, patent burgundy take on the trend. High-shine pieces have been another accessory go-to, and Saint Laurent has taken note as well, with a beautiful glossy set of patent Le 5 à 7 bags.

The traditional hobo size in boasts an adjustable shoulder strap, it’s great for toggling if you’re wearing bulkier coats or sweaters or prefer it to sit longer versus directly under your arm. Slim in design, it fits just the essentials; think your phone, a card case, your keys, wireless earbuds, and sunglasses. Funnily, it works best if you play a little bit of Tetris with your items.

“It’s deceptive in how much it holds,” says one WWD editor, who deems it a well-worthy investment. “All my friends know me to carry the largest portable phone charger possible, and this bag is perfect for going out beyond happy hour. I have the embossed crocodile version, and it balances out some of my more casual outfits with a touch of polish.” The WWD editor adds, “I usually style mine with straight-leg jeans and a tee, but I’ve also worn mine with tailored shorts and an oversized button-down. It’s great in the summer to wear with a pair of cutoffs or a playsuit. I’ll even pair it with a full sweatsuit to feel like an off-duty celebrity. I could see it with a sundress and an oversized leather jacket.”

History of Saint Laurent Le 5 à 7 Bags

First launched in the Spring of 2021 at the spring 2021 Runway Presentation, the 5 a 7 collection was named in honor of a New Wave French film, “Cleo from 5 to 7,” a favorite of Saint Laurent designer Anthony Vaccarello. A cult classic, the film spans June evening from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m., following pop singer “Cleo” who awaits news of a biopsy. The Saint Laurent 5 to 7 collection has a distinctly retro feel and seems as if it could easily be in Cleo’s arsenal of ’60s outfits. Much like the film period itself, the collection is light, airy, and cool — we could easily see Jean Seberg carrying one as Patricia in Breathless alongside Jean-Paul Belmondo, or Anna Karina in My Life to Live.

Much like the film it draws inspiration from, the bag stands in as one anticipates their evening activities, and 5 to 7 is traditionally happy hour time. The allure of a memorable evening, with the bag slung under your arm, feels intoxicating. Anthony Vaccarello often takes inspiration from the ’60s and plays into the rich history of the relationship Saint Laurent has nurtured between celebrities, muses, and rockstars. The Loulou collection is named in honor of Loulou de la Falaise. The chevron-quilted bags, available in a variety of sizes, feel like the bags you’d see on the arms of famous women like Bianca Jagger. Where you take your 5 to 7 bag, ensure there’s an adventure (and a martini) involved.
