Update: The Snoopy MoonSwatch is officially here!

Everyone alive at the time remembers where they were on that fateful day…January 24, 2024, when Swatch posted a video of Snoopy on the surface of the moon atop a briefcase of Omega’s still white-hot MoonSwatch. The video clip seemed to signal that the beloved pooch was set to appear on a new limited-edition of the collaborative line, as he has on highly sought-after mainline versions of the Omega Speedmaster. It’s been two long months since that howl, however, and we still haven’t seen the piece in its entirety or have a date to line up for what will surely be one of the most coveted versions of the MoonSwatch. Here’s everything we know so far.

What gives?

It’s a real pickle. Following the initial teaser video, the next big news that came from the Omega and Swatch galaxy was the auction sale of a collectible briefcase complete with all of the special-edition “Mission to Moonshine Gold” watches released over the course of last year. This news arrived almost exactly a week after Snoopy’s appearance with an identical briefcase.

So, Snoopy was just a prop to promote this briefcase?

It felt like it at first, but it seems now that it was all a big misdirection given what’s happened since.

What’s happened since?

Snoopy popped up on Swatch’s Instagram again, this time without a moon or a watch. On February 18, the Swiss manufacturer posted a video of the pup carrying a frosted pink birthday cake. Jot that down for later.

Anything else?

Yes! Just last night—on Tuesday, March 19—Swatch shared the most revealing video of the Snoopy MoonSwatch yet. The reel shows off a moonphase complication in action that rotates a pair of Snoopys reclined on the moon. It also glows with the phrase “I Can’t Sleep Without a Night Light!” Inexpensive, quartz-powered moonphase complications aren’t totally rare, but it’ll be another desirable addition to a watch line that’s already considered a great value.

OK, get to the important stuff: When can I buy this thing??

There are two current theories.

Gimme the first.

This one I find less likely, but there’s solid evidence behind it. Most of the limited-edition MoonSwatch releases have centered around the start of a new moon phase. The next new moon just happens to be April 8, the first day of Watches & Wonders 2024. Swatch and Omega notably don’t participate in the industry’s biggest trade show, but they certainly wouldn’t mind stealing some of its thunder. The original MoonSwatches debuted in March 2022, just before that year’s iteration of the fair, and I remember them being one of the most exciting watches to spot on the ground.

What’s the other theory?

I believe the Snoopy MoonSwatch will release next week on March 26. There’s more red string headed this direction. The first is Snoopy carrying a birthday cake, which seems to nod to the anniversary of the MoonSwatch’s original release, March 26, 2022. The second piece of evidence pointing in this direction is a print advertisement making the rounds that shows a paw print on the moon and the date “26.3.2024.” Although, there’s no branding on the ad besides a Peanuts copyright, this isn’t a particularly inscrutable tea leaf..

Why a Snoopy MoonSwatch, anyway?

Snoopy is a beloved character who already stars on plenty of timepieces. However, there’s an even greater connection to the cartoon pooch for Omega. The Speedmaster’s biggest claim to fame, of course, is that it’s the watch certified by NASA for space-bound astronauts. And one of the most prestigious awards an astronaut can win is NASA’s Silver Snoopy Award, given to those who display “professionalism, dedication and outstanding support that greatly enhanced space flight safety and mission success.” That makes this a fitting tie-in for what is one of the most anticipated pieces of 2024.
