You may not have heard about Tower of Fantasy, and that’s why its upcoming crossover with Neon Genesis Evangelion will excite you. How can one get a sizeable boost of new players in their modest mobile game? The answer is mechs.

Tower of Fantasy is a free-play anime-inspired MMORPG with hack-and-slash combat set in a shared world. The game was released in 2022 and has since enjoyed a niche audience. It may have set its sights on HoYoverse’s games, but a cursory look at its stats on SteamDB reveals a dwindling player base. With the game celebrating 1.5 since launch, developer Hotta Studio has big plans in mind for its first crossover.

The game's upcoming update, dubbed Version 3.7: Evangelion Fantasy, will add the anime's signature mechs to the game, as well as characters like Asuka Langley Soryu and Rei Ayanami. While playing through the new story content, you'll also meet many legendary mecha from the anime, including EVA-00, EVA-01, and EVA-02. The update also adds a new battle companion Smart Servant Pen Pen along with a new vehicle for traversal.

The update will be released on March 12, so you still have time to catch up with the game's world and mechanics.

The trailer shows these mechs wreaking havoc across the game’s world, with giant battles that look right out of the anime series that popularized them. What’s great is that Neon Genesis’ aesthetic seamlessly fits in with that of Tower of Fantasy, so the crossover doesn’t feel forced.

The only thing that may come as a disappointment is that you'll probably not be able to control the mechs. At no point in the trailer do we see the playable characters get into a robot. But hey, watching giant robots fight each other with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 playing in the background looks pretty cool. Maybe this is the shot in the arm that will help the game stand on its own.
