The End Of Evangelion Is Getting A Theatrical Release In The US

In 1997, Neon Genesis Evangelion wrapped up its story with one last film: The End of Evangelion. It was a fine film, and is widely beloved by fans, despite its… questionable elements. Despite being a smash hit at the Japanese box office, the film was never released theatrically in the US. That’s about to change.

GKIDS Films has announced that, 25 years after its initial release in Japan, The End of Evangelion is coming to theaters in the US. The film will be shown in US theaters on March 17 and March 20, 2024 in a very limited run — realistically, once these two dates have passed, you probably won’t get this chance again.

GKIDS says that screenings of the films will be in Japanese with English subtitles, with none of the screenings on these two dates being the English dubbed version. There are a number of different locations and showtimes available, but unfortunately there’s no master list available. If you want to know if it’s showing near you, you’ll have to check the official website for the screening of the film.

The End of Evangelion is a remake of the series’ last two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, following up NGE: Death and Rebirth, which retold the first 24 episodes of the series. It changed up a few details from the original airing, although once again, featured some questionable elements. Fans of the series know exactly what I’m talking about when I mention the hospital scene, but for those who don’t, well… good luck. This is not a family-friendly film by any stretch of the imagination.

GKIDS also sells the movie on Blu-ray via its own store, and on Amazon and Walmart. It’s available on Apple TV and Amazon Prime Video too, for subscribers of those services, in both subbed and dubbed formats.
