Shopping for spring and summer can either be exciting or overwhelming; do you go with bright prints or soft neutrals? Should you secure twill shorts or light-washed denim? What about open-toed wedges or barely there sandals? The truth is, you don’t have to stack your cart high with every seasonal option out there. Instead, take celebrity stylist Maeve Reilly’s approach, who’s dressed A-list names like Eva Longoria, and strategically choose a few versatile pieces.

In partnership with Rent the Runway, a fashion service that allows subscribers to rent, buy, and try trending styles at a heavy discount (which basically eliminates outfit repeating), Reilly told InStyle the six spring and summer trends she believes everyone should own. Shop her recommendations, below, including celebrity-worn sneakers, transitional denim, and comfortable linen sets.

6 Spring and Summer Separates

Celebrity-Loved Sneakers

Warm weather calls for spending time outdoors, so secure a comfortable shoe that keeps up with your active lifestyle. Reilly loves the Adidas Samba, which has been worn by Jennifer Lawrence, Kendall Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and fashion editors alike. In Reilly’s words, the Adidas Samba is “effortlessly cool;” however, the celeb-loved kick tends to sell out fast. Right now, only the Humanrace rendition is available, though the in-stock Adidas Gazelle sneaker and VL Court 3.0 tennis shoe are great lookalikes.

Barrel-Leg Denim

Denim can do no wrong, especially when it’s “so transitional,” according to Reilly. She has an affinity for the controversial barrel-leg style, which has been worn by Jennifer Lopez, Katie Holmes, and Julianne Moore. The balloon-like bottoms are surprisingly flattering, much like the Banana Republic Factory mid-rise jeans. Light washed options, such as the Frame high-waist pants and Anthropologie jeans effortlessly slip into spring, while “lightweight tops and sandals” make barrel bottoms great for summer, said Reilly.

Matching Linen Sets

Reilly’s go-to ‘fit for sticky, hot weather? Matching linen sets. “They're just so easy, comfortable, and always look put together,” said the style expert. She continued to explain how these breezy sets transition from day to night, giving shoppers an unfussy outfit for all occasions. I have heart eyes for the Anrabess sleeveless top and wide-leg pants set, while the J.Crew button-back shirt and coordinating dad shorts make me swoon. For something original, consider the Madewell linen vest and straight-leg pants.

Breezy Sundresses

No warm-weather wardrobe is complete without an array of breezy sundresses, and Reilly is on board. She highlighted both silk and cotton finds, making me think of the Hill House Home Ellie Nap Dress and Nordstrom V-Neck Satin Midi Dress. For something more elevated, consider the Petal & Pup one-shoulder sundress, which boasts vibrant orange hues. Each gown can be dressed up and down with sneakers for a park picnic, heels for a wedding, and sandals for a stroll around the block.

Mesh Mary Jane Flats

According to Reilly, slip-on shoes offer a “practical, everlasting” approach to seasonal footwear, and the $890 Alaïa mesh Mary Jane has stolen her style heart. If that’s a bit out of your price range, the Open Edit and Arqa crochet Mary Jane shoes provide budget-friendly alternatives, while Sam Edelman takes an elegant approach to the see-through style worn by Jennifer Lawrence and Chrissy Teigen. No matter which transparent shoe you go for, it’s like wearing sandals without having your toes out; aka, a summer dream.

White T-Shirts

Basic doesn’t mean boring, and that’s exactly why Reilly called out simple white tees. Wear options like the J.Crew linen top, $11 Hanes shirt, or ribbed Madewell find with jeans and sneakers for a foolproof outfit formula, or layer them under overalls and crochet cardigans. It’s the one-and-done closet staple that will always be in style.
