EDITORIAL: Animal groups need support now more than ever

Apr. 27—The volunteers behind A Cause for Paws Logansport are used to overcoming obstacles.

Founded in 1998 and despite never having a permanent home, A Cause for Paws has fostered over 2,500 cats and 500 dogs. Impressive numbers for a constantly cash-strapped nonprofit organization that relies on the support of the community to continue operations.

One of those major support lines was cut off earlier this month. After spending years using Rural King to house caged cats and run weekly Saturday adoption events, A Cause for Paws is looking for a new place to set up shop.

"New management came in and said corporate had changed its opinion and we were no longer allowed to show animals there," volunteer Melissa Closson Gerni told the Pharos-Tribune.

In the past, A Cause of Paws has partnered with the local humane shelter, the Logansport Mall and Petsense.

"(Rural King) was the best we had," said Closson Gerni. "The people who came in and saw the animals, they would just call us and we would come in and do an adoption."

Pharos-Tribune reached out to the Logansport Rural King and were referred to its corporate offices, which have yet to respond.

A Cause for Paws said the Saturday events at Rural King accounted for about 100 adoptions a year. While they have no place to show the pets available for adoption, members of the organization have continued to take in rescued cats and dogs.

These volunteers should be applauded and supported. When A Cause for Paws takes in a pet, they spay and neuter the animal, treat any illness or injuries, and vaccinate the pet while also taking care of it. They estimated that they might invest $300 into a cat before it's adopted.

While they look for a new home, they said they are always in need of foster homes, food, litter and other supplies if anyone in the community would like to assist them.
