The Kentucky Derby is this Saturday, May 4, and this year is a big one—the 150th anniversary. Whether you are donning your best Derby hat and heading to Churchill Downs or planning to watch the Kentucky Derby at home, you don't want to miss it.
Wynonna Judd will perform the National Anthem, and it will be everyone's first look at the $200 million dollar paddock renovation. New executive head chef Robert Lopez has curated an on-site menu that features modern twists on Southern cuisine (this year, the mint juleps will feature a special rose-infused honey syrup that took two months to make!), while Martha Stewart created a special Derby menu you can whip up at home. (The editors at Country Living have lots of Kentucky Derby recipes and party ideas for you to peruse too!)
Now, when it comes to Kentucky Derby 150th anniversary memorabilia, it can be pricey. A limited-edition Longines watch created for the occasion rings in at just under $4K, while Woodford Reserve's commemorative gold-plated mint julep cup, handcrafted by Kentucky jeweler From the Vault and inlaid with white sapphires, goes for $5K.
Not in your budget? Ours neither. Not to worry because we rounded up some great keepsakes for the 150th Run for the Roses that range from under $10 to $50!
2024 Official Mint Julep Glass, 12oz
This year’s 150th-Derby souvenir mint julep glass won't set you back much, but you might want to keep it in the family as an heirloom. Today, a circa-1939 sipper can fetch as much as $5,000 at auction!
Kentucky Derby Race Day Coffee in Keepsake Tin
As a UGA alum, I have fond memories of Jittery Joe's in Athens, Georgia, so I was excited to see this Derby collaboration. Race Day Coffee features beans from Guatemala, Brazil, and Peru and offers "notes of chocolate with a complex roasted nutty finish." In my household, we found it a very worthy swap for our go-to local medium roast. The beans disappeared pronto, but the tin with a vintage-style race-day illustration is a keeper! Use it as the base for a centerpiece or as a container for corralling craft supplies. Find the coffee at Jittery Joe's or at the Kentucky Derby Museum.
Reuse the tin as a vase: To make, place a water-filled mason jar inside the tin. Add a grid of thin clear tape or floral tape over the top to create a structure to hold the flower stems in place. Arrange flowers (I used a grocery-store bouquet).
Kentucky Derby Run for the Roses Tee
In the clothing category, Vineyard Vines is the "Official Style of The Kentucky Derby" this year. We love this vintage-look graphic tee commemorating the years 1875–2024. Note: To get the sale price on this tee, use the code SUNSAVE through April 30.
2024 Kentucky Derby 150 Bottle
Woodford Reserve’s annual collector’s edition Kentucky Derby bourbon bottle is a 25-year tradition. Kentucky native Wylie Caudill created the rose-laden artwork for this year's 150th anniversary bottle. He also created the Official Art of the Kentucky Derby for Churchill Downs this year.
Reuse the bottle for table water when you entertain: After you finish every last drop of tasty bourbon, reuse the bottle to pour water refills at the table at your next brunch or casual dinner party. (I borrowed this idea from my dining experience at the The Kitchen Table restaurant at James B. Beam Distilling Co. in Clermont, Kentucky.)
