As I was reading today’s cover story, I started thinking about what would be on my summer bucket list.

It’s a lot harder than I thought it would be. When it comes to outdoor activities, I don't like the heat or mosquitoes. So that really limits my options for summer in the Cape Fear region.

I decided to look at it a little differently. Maybe these things aren’t on my bucket list, but they are things I look forward to this time of year.

Adorning my yard with colorful decorations and flowers – As the weather gets warmer, I get excited to hang my garden flag with daisies on it and to add a few yard ornaments. We also typically plant a few flowers each year just to add a pop of color. Seeing flowers in bloom always makes me smile.

Going to a Wilmington Sharks baseball game – My husband loves baseball, so he ends up going to more games than I do. But even before we met, I spent many a summer night at Buck Hardee field cheering on the Sharks.

Taking a boat ride – My husband and I typically go out at least once a year with Wilmington Water Tours. Sometimes, we go when relatives are visiting, but other times, it’s just the two of us. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of cruising along the Cape Fear River and taking in the beautiful scenery. Last year, we had planned to take a tour with Southport Water Tours, but the weather resulted in it being canceled. I’m hoping we can put that on our list for this summer.

Lunch along the Riverwalk – While Wilmington has several great restaurants along the Riverwalk, my favorite spot is Anne Bonny’s Bar and Grill. The menu includes a variety of appetizers, sandwiches and salads, but it’s the location and atmosphere that make it special. You can usually watch boaters passing by or later in the day, you can catch amazing sunsets from this spot.

Listening to live music at a local brewery – Reporter Allison Ballard recently wrote about cool beer gardens in the region. On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, you can often find me and my husband sitting outside at one of these places listening to local musicians.

I know these things probably sound pretty simple. The truth is that my husband and I enjoy doing simple activities. While we’ve taken a few vacations to other states and even once to Mexico, I generally prefer to spend time enjoying everyday life.

Whatever your plans are for the summer, I hope you find time to take advantage of some of the fun activities right here in Wilmington.
