Recycling efforts at Charlotte non-profit save 11K+ pounds of material from landfill

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Today is Earth Day, and to celebrate, the workers at Innovation Barn in Charlotte are doing what they can to keep construction material out of the landfill.

Some items recycled at the nonprofit help make mulch, become Spectrum Center concrete filler, and get used in various art projects.

On Saturday, before the doors opened at the ‘Second Chance Re-use’ event, 175 people waited in line. Architects, contractors, and designers dropped off carpet remnants, tile, wood, and other clothing materials.

It was free to the public, and people took items home in wheelbarrows, wagons, or shopping bags. The staff and volunteers say they continue to be amazed by how people recycle items.

“So, we have a lot of teachers who come get the fabric,” Innovation Barn Executive Director Amy Aussieker said. “Or the carpet tiles for their kids, that is awesome. We had an artist who used little wood panels to display their jewelry. It’s endless. The creativity that comes in here for these samples is endless.”

During the ‘Second Chance Re-Use’ event, staffers say they saved 11,114 pounds of material from the landfill. The Innovation Barn is open to the public from Tuesday through Friday, for more information, click here.
