Earth Day pop up highlights eco-friendly businesses in the Fox Valley

APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – Some eco-friendly local Fox Valley businesses participated in a pop-up shop in honor of Earth Day.

Even though Earth Day is a holiday to celebrate sustainability, Hooge salon owner Carmen Young says it is important to keep the planet in mind every day.

“You can be super trendy and fashionable by buying consignment things instead of always purchasing new. The same with jewelry products or nature products. Anything we can do to ethically source products to make beauty products, you’re supporting the humans and the planet.”

To shed light on small businesses in the Fox Valley making an environmental impact, the pop-up event had a variety of vendors for clothing, natural self-care products, upcycled jewelry, and more.

Mandrelworks owner Adrienne Fuhrmann creates jewelry from jewelry waste.

She says, “I got a selection of jewelry that’s made from recycled silver, so it’s kind of cast-off waste from other parts of the process.”

Vendor fees will be matched by the salon and donated to Charity Water, a nonprofit organization that brings clean water to countries in need. Supporting local businesses and eco-friendly living are values Maja Glidden from Appleton hopes to pass on to her daughter.

About shopping at the event, Glidden says, “I think the biggest thing with today’s event is that it’s local vendors and small businesses, which is really fun, and that they’re eco-friendly. It’s a plus on top of that, so just helping out where you can making small differences in your shopping I think can have a big impact.”

The Hooge salon also works with a company to recycle 95% of their salon waste.
