GREEN BAY - Earth Day is just around the corner.

Fifty-four years ago, former Wisconsin Gov. and U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson held true to his nickname “Conservation Governor” and helped create the very first Earth Day that is still celebrated today.

To get in the spirit, local neighborhood associations and conservation groups in the Green Bay area are holding cleanups and environmental projects over the weekend.

Here's a roundup of Earth Day events in the Green Bay area.

Annual trash bash downtown

Celebrate Earth Day a few days early by picking up litter in the Downtown and Olde Maine Street districts. Volunteers will meet at Whitney Park, 800 Main St., to pick up cleaning supplies Thursday afternoon. Participants can bring their own brooms, gloves, and pickers if they have them.

The cleanup starts at 1 p.m. Thursday. Sign up on www.signup.com.

Work day at Baird Creek Greenway

The Baird Creek Preservation Foundation is holding its annual Earth Day work day and cleanup at Baird Creek Greenway on Saturday. Join the trash pickup, help plant seeds, remove invasive plants, and work on the trails. Tree planting and maintenance will also happen at the Paul Hartman Prairie.

Volunteers for the cleanup should meet at Triangle Hill chalet for snacks, coffee, and hot chocolate between 8:30-9 a.m. before heading out. If you want to help plant trees, meet at 4677 Eaton Road. Bring gloves and work boots you're not afraid of getting dirty. More information is on Baird Creek's website.

Adopt-A-Beach cleanup

Green Bay Sail and Paddle (GBSP) is hosting a beach and marina cleanup event to give back on Earth Day weekend. There will be two cleanups in Green Bay at the South Bay Marina, 101 Bay Beach Road, and Riverway Marina, 457 Marina Lane.

Both cleanups are at 10 a.m. Saturday. Registration is required through GBSP's website at www.gbsail.org.

Spruce up Astor Park

The Astor East River Neighborhood Association is hosting a cleanup and planting event at Astor Park, 1100 Porlier St. Help beautify the park by planting perennials and cleaning up trash, with plants donated by the Green Bay Botanical Garden.

The cleanup starts at 10 a.m. at Astor Park Saturday. Volunteers can bring their own gloves and garden shovels. More information is at www.allevents.com.

Earth Day Celebration at Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary

Celebrate Earth Day all afternoon Sunday at the wildlife sanctuary, 1660 East Shore Drive. Make enrichment items for the wildlife in your backyard, plant seeds for a monarch butterfly garden, or sponsor animals in Bay Beach's rehabilitation program.

All festivities are free and will be between noon and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Observation Building of Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary on Sunday. More information is on the Facebook event.
