Dry cleaning available in Canton

Apr. 6—CANTON — Last year, when Green's Furniture closed its doors following the village of Canton's purchase of the properties at 19 Miner St., Erin S. Alguire, owner of the Celtic Knot, began offering dry cleaning services.

Green's was one of the last dry cleaning providers in St. Lawrence County.

Business has been good, Alguire said.

"I was shocked," Alguire said about the volume of business. "I didn't think it would be like this."

Amanda S. Armstrong, who works at the Celtic Knot, speculated that people had been holding on to their dry cleaning and began to bring it out when they heard about the service.

The dry cleaning is not done in Canton. Alguire sends the items to AP Laundry & Dry Cleaners in Malone.

It is a weekly service, Alguire said. She said large or complicated items, like wedding dresses, might take longer.

Dry cleaning is not a dry process. Fabrics are dipped and soaked in a liquid chemical solvent, of which several alternatives exist.

AP Laundry owner Tony Pryce does his on-site dry cleaning using an up-to-date machine purchased in 2020. At the time of its installation Pryce said, the machine uses environmentally safe and odor-free solvents.

Pryce picks up laundry weekly in Canton, Massena and Plattsburgh.

Five fabrics should always be dry cleaned: silk, wool, suede, leather and linen.

Men's suits and shirts are also frequently dry cleaned or specially laundered, Alguire said.

Many people like their collars starched and pressed, Armstrong said.

They also get a lot of winter clothing, drapes, bed linen and bedspreads.

Items can be dropped off during regular business hours. Ap Laundry picks up and drops off items on Thursday mornings.

Store hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Celtic Knot is at 17 Main St.
