Every Dolly Parton recipe I’ve made has always aimed for simplicity. Her chicken and dumplings recipe was easy to throw together, so I figured her beloved peanut butter pie recipe would follow that same theme. After taking a quick scan of the recipe, I realized I was correct; Parton loves keeping her desserts just as simple as her dinners. Her peanut butter pie features six ingredients and only three simple steps. So of course, I had to give it a try!

Before diving in, I did realize that her recipe does make two peanut butter pies. Since I don’t plan on serving pie to a crowd, I decided to half the recipe and only make one. However, this recipe is easy to double (or triple) if you’re making pie for multiple people, so feel free to multiply the ingredients! Here’s what I thought of the pie.

How to Make Dolly Parton’s Peanut Butter Pie

In a stand mixer, beat together powdered sugar, cream cheese, and creamy peanut butter until smooth.

Fold in the Cool Whip (one regular-sized container) until everything is combined.

Pour the pie filling into a prepared graham cracker crust. You can either buy one pre-made, or make one yourself!

Cover the pie and leave it to chill in the fridge until you’re ready to serve. Serve with whipped cream and extra toppings like crushed graham crackers or peanuts!

My Honest Review

This pie honestly tasted like a light peanut butter cheesecake. The added cream cheese in it gave this pie a bit more of a salty, savory taste, which I think helps to balance out all of that powdered sugar and Cool Whip in the pie. Plus, with the added creamy peanut butter, this pie does satisfy that salty-sweet craving I typically have for dessert.

As for making the pie, I was really skeptical at first. The filling was light and airy, and I was afraid it wasn’t going to set properly. I ended up giving this pie 24 hours in the fridge to chill and set, and I’m glad I did. The filling does chill and set nicely, and the slices of this pie come out super clean. I topped it with some extra whipped cream and graham cracker crumbs, and it was the best decision. I definitely would make this again!

2 Tips for Making Dolly Parton’s Peanut Butter Pie

Let the cream cheese come to room temperature: Not only is cold cream cheese hard to beat, but it also separates into small colder chunks when you whip it. A room-temperature cream cheese is smoother and more pliable, and will make for a smoother filling when you make this pie.

Give this recipe some serious time to chill: As I mentioned, I was afraid that the filling of this pie wouldn’t set, so I decided to give it a full day of chilling in the fridge before slicing and serving. While I don’t think you need a full day to do this, I do think you should give this pie several hours before you serve it. The slices will come out all pretty and clean if you’re patient!
