Dog Who's Spent Almost 1000 Days in the Shelter Has Heartwarming Response to Field Trip

Practically everywhere you go, there are plenty of shelter dogs in need of forever homes. You can look up a number of humane societies and dog rescues in your area if you're interested in adopting a shelter dog, but if you're in the Pekin, Illinois, area, you should see if Lee could be your boy.

This sweet, 3-year-old dog has practically grown up in the shelter, but he's ready to go home for good! It's been almost 1000 days since he first arrived at the rescue, and he's gotten the help he needs to become a whole new dog. With his allergies under better control and his socialization improving every day, he's ready to go home with an owner who's committed to helping him be his best self.

Aww! Lee is such a handsome dog, and it breaks my heart to know he's been waiting in the shelter for almost three years. It seems like he's put in the work to become a very good boy, and that work has paid off beautifully!

As this shelter dog proves, even short trips to the craft store can be an opportunity to socialize a dog. Lee enjoys smelling the candles (except the coffee-scented one), saying hello to employees, and simply taking a stroll somewhere new. Even though he can't go to the park due to his skin allergies, a little creativity and resourcefulness will give him plenty of entertaining outings to enjoy.

Why Enrichment Is Important for Dogs

Field trips like this are so much more than ways to get rescue dogs out and about for the day. One commenter suggested getting an 'adopt me!' vest for Lee's outings, because he meets so many new friends, but even just smelling the craft store scents and wandering the aisles, can provide essential canine enrichment that makes his shelter time much more bearable.

Desensitizing shelter dogs to different environments, including Hobby Lobby, can help them practice for the different places and situations they'll encounter once they're adopted. Remember--positive adoption meetings will help so many pups find their forever homes, and it's amazing to see shelter staff finding different ways to provide necessary desensitization and enrichment.

Not only shelter dogs benefit from enrichment, though! Mental activities such as treat-releasing puzzle toys can help prevent boredom and behavior issues, like stolen shoes or chewed-up furniture. It can also help you raise a happy dog!

Lee has proven that a little enrichment can go a long way, and if you're a crafter in the Illinois area who's ready for four more paws in your home, he would be more than happy to accompany you to the store. If you'd like more information about him, visit the TAPS shelter website!
