'Who doesn't want to go to Pound Town?': Petition to rename Texas town goes viral

A coalition is hoping to change the name of one Texas town in Hays County from Dripping Springs to Pound Town after Dr. Joseph and Sarah Pound, described by members as among the town’s “most outstanding and earliest settlers.” But its noble effort has taken a lowbrow turn on social media, due to observers who can’t help but chuckle over the name’s double entendre.

That’s largely thanks to the financial support of Jesse James, host of Jesse James: Outlaw Garage. His company’s mailing address is in the town and he donated $1,500 towards the name-change effort, then writing about it on Facebook and Instagram, where the posts have received over 820 reactions and 5,600 likes, respectively. “So check this out! These dudes from my little town Dripping Springs are trying to get the name changed to Pound Town!” he wrote, adding, among his many reasons for support, “City merch sales will be through the roof!”

A sampling of the comments on his posts include, “That’s the name of my bedroom,” “Best place to take the wife for your anniversary…,” “A lot of porn companies would like that address,” and “Just like Intercourse, Pennsylvania.”

The group has already surpassed its modest goal of $1,854 on GoFundMe, perhaps due to supporters’ passion over honoring the Pounds. In fact, one donator happily wrote, “Who doesn’t want to go to Pound Town?”

“Pound Town, Texas is the idea to rename Dripping Springs, TX in order to honor the memory of Dr. Joseph and Sarah Pound, the town’s founders,” the GoFundMe reads before listing the many reasons they hope to honor the Pound family. They list Pound as the first doctor in Hay County who also allowed his home to serve as a “medical office and hospital, church, schoolhouse, post office and social gathering place for the fledgling community.”

The coalition promises that donations will be used to fund a “fun” campaign, but they cannot guarantee it will result in a ballot initiative. They also pledge to donate a portion of their proceeds to Friends of the Pound House, a historic homestead in the community, to help with upkeep and education.
