DENVER (KDVR) — If you’ve ever lost something at the Denver International Airport, you aren’t alone.

Far from it, actually. In 2021, the airport said that, at the time, its lost and found team processed around 2,600 items a month, down from the 4,800 it processed a month in 2019.

Why Denver International Airport doesn’t call itself ‘DIA’

Denver’s lost and found

If anything is lost in the public areas of the airport, it will likely show up at the lost and found. However, there are exceptions: Some items, like, food or hazardous materials, are not accepted if found outside of a suitcase or backpack.

The five most commonly lost items at Denver’s airport:

  1. Bags

  2. Electronics (like earbuds and laptops)

  3. IDs

  4. Cellphones

  5. Wallets or purses

The airport doesn’t just collect these items for fun, either. If you believe you’ve lost something at the airport, you can file a free claim online to get it back, call the department during business hours or visit the department in person at the Jeppesen Terminal.

There are some things to note, however. If you lost your item on the plane or at the gate before boarding, the airline is typically the one who holds onto the item, and you would have to contact them to reunite with it.

Additionally, items lost in businesses are handled by each business instead of by the airport.

Once the 30 days are up, the item can no longer be retrieved and could end up being put up for auction by the City and County of Denver on its website.
