Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert

Nine days after Derek Hough's wife, Hayley Erbert, underwent emergency surgery after suffering a cranial hematoma, the Dancing with the Stars judge shared a health update.

On Friday, Dec. 15, Hough took to Instagram to post a video of himself and Erbert holding hands while walking away from the camera and toward the Washington Monument. Erbert's head is bandaged in the clip, but her face is not visible.

"As you all know, the past week has been a challenging journey for us due to a life-threatening event that suddenly came into our lives," Hough wrote. "It was a time filled with uncertainty and fear, going from living our dreams onstage, to a nightmare in an instant."

The cranial hematoma occurred as Erbert and Hough performed during their Symphony of Dance tour in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 6, Hough revealed via Instagram on Dec. 7.

In his most recent update, the professional dancer shared that Erbert is "doing well," and that her recovery "has been nothing short of a miracle."

Hough added: "She still has a ways to go with another surgery, hopefully in a few weeks, to insert a skull implant to replace the piece that was removed during the craniectomy. It will restore the skull to its natural shape and protect the brain from injury."

In his post, the grateful husband thanked followers for their support and expressed gratitude for Erbert's medical care.

"It’s been a profound reminder of how fragile life can be and how quickly things can change," he wrote. "But, it has also shown us the incredible strength and resilience that lies within us and the power of having a supportive community around us."

Hough concluded: "While this isn’t the holiday season either of us envisioned, it’s one that we’re incredibly grateful to have. We look forward to cherishing these moments with a deeper appreciation for life and the people in it. We love you all 🙏🏼❤️."
